Copy Cat Ads: Part 6

Shamus Toomey · Oct 21, 2026 ·

The more I search through the AMHF’s collection of brochures and magazine advertisements, the more examples of Australian car companies and their advertising agencies reusing overseas advertisements and brochures I find.

1972 XA FORD FALCON

When Ford released its 1972 XA range, they claimed it was “born on the wind”. What was not shared with potential buyers was that one of the main advertising images had been taken from the 1971 Mercury brochure.

1968 PONTIAC

GMH and Pontiac are a rich source for this series. Here are two more examples of reversing the image and making small changes.

Two extra doors have been added to the 1968 US Bonneville coupe, above, to make it a four door Parisienne, below.

1968 PONTIAC

The 1966 US Executive model, above, becomes an Australian Parisienne. They did not bother to reverse the image, but moved the steering wheel instead. Also changed were the model badges, side trim and hub caps. Rear wheel covers were added.

1963 FORD FAIRLANE

Here’s a re-work of the 1962 US Fairlane into the 1963 local model.

There will be more in this series of copycat ads soon.
