1925 Morris Cowley: Chassis 82308

Hugh King · Jul 1, 2024 ·

Library Acquisitions

Collection of Manufacturer’s delivery papers, Sydney NSW 1925

Donated by Hugh King, 2023

Hugh acquired this material in 1978 from a Mr Clifford McFadyen of East Lindfield NSW. Mr McFadyen was the son of the first owner, who purchased the car in 1925 at Williams Bros. Limited, 255-259 Elizabeth Street, Sydney named as ‘Sole Distributors’.

Included in the original branded sepia envelope 35x25cm with blue pencil mark ‘82038’ are –

  • Soft-cover handbook ‘The Morris Oxford & Cowley Car Manual’ publication date 1 January 1925. Publisher ‘Morris Motors Ltd. Cowley, Oxford’. Octavo, staple-bound, complete, 96 pages.
  • Letter (undated) of introduction to ‘The Morris Owner’ published by Morris Motors Ltd.
  • Brochure ‘Morris Cars’ of Williams Bros. Limited: octavo, staple-bound, 8 pages. Specifications of Morris Cowley cars.
  • Envelope 15x10cm with pencil mark ‘T.K.M. No. 82038’ containing two one-page items completed by hand dated 18 March 1925 originating at ‘Morris Motors Limited, Cowley-Oxon.’ re dispatch of the car ‘Chassis No. 82308 Type MC4S’ (presumably Morris Cowley 4 seater) to Melbourne agent Tozer Kemsley (presumably ‘T.K.M.’).
  • Small brochures inviting subscription published respectively by ‘Royal Automobile Club Pall Mall London’ and ‘The Automobile Association Fanum House Whitcomb Street London’.

This whole collection of papers appears to be complete, undamaged and authentic with some photos on file (the history cannot be further tested locally but the provenance is good). The car itself when purchased was garaged in East Lindfield, NSW and was said to have been sold by the first owner in about 1930.

The papers are categorized as ‘original source material’ by the AMHF Library and can be viewed on site at the Library.
